so this post is a long time in coming. Three weeks ago, I got a chance to drive our rental car in San Diego, a For Mustang. I couldn’t stop talking about it. I was driving a HOT car… in the middle of sunny San Diego. It was awesome. I wanted to show off.
Last week, my car broke, and while it was in being fixed, they gave me a rental car. In the middle of a sort-of-rough neighborhood, I was very protective. I drove defensively, I didn’t want to wreck something that was loaned to me. I didn’t want some clunker with no insurance ruin something that was entrusted to me.
I laugh at myself, because seeing a metaphor for God in such a mundane thing as rental cars just screams “religious fanatic!” but really… it makes sense. God gave us our body, our life ‘on loan’. Why do we drive so recklessly, as if it was ours to lose? We should drive it carefully, protective that it doesn’t get wrecked, scratched, even from the world around us.
Just another way of thinking about it, really.
