The Challenge

So here’s my thought process. A couple of witty statements made by friends got stuck in my mind and haven’t left. They act as a kind of challenge for me, taunting me. they are as follows:

Do I really believe, that what I believe is true?

The bible is one really long romance novel about God wooing us, wooing me.

The bible is like a math textbook, insofar as all the answers are in the back of the book.

so taking my broken heart, loss of direction and a curiousity about why one really passionate guy named David got so mushy in psalm 119 about boring old laws about what not to eat and how to kill a cow, of all things. So, I’ve been trying to figure out what exactly got David so excited, and maybe if I really believe that what I believe is true, then maybe God IS a personal God, and is out to woo me and wants to make me fall in love with Him. And maybe David was right, maybe i can find it somewhere buried in those long boring books like “Leviticus” and “Deuteronomy.” I can’t even get through the name without yawning. Until I actually started reading them. well…. Leviticus still seems pretty dry, but Deuteronomy surprised me. And really, I never realized how deeply rooted Jesus’ answers were, until I read what those pharisees and sadusees had been studying day and night. They knew instantly, what parts of Jesus’ teaching was “right” (according to their law, the Torah) and what was  so revolutionary. I had kinda always thought that Jesus was the origional author of EVERYTHING he said… not really…. like yet another saying  from my friends…. “you guys got it mostly right, now here’s the missing link.”
Biggest lightbulb example: Deuteronomy 6:4-5 and Mark 12: 28-34. He took what they knew and took it further.

so I dont know that i’m in love with him yet… i’m still pretty pissed that He took a real life David from me, but theres a lot more in those first few books than just cow killing and “do not eats”. so we’ll see what happens.
